Coca Cola gives away $3 million in Scholarships

By Adekunle Oduye

Coca Cola is giving away $3 million in scholarships to 250 of America's top high school students. The students were selected amongst 87,000 graduating seniors representing 23,000 schools.

The National Selection Committee was in charge of choosing the class of 2007 Coca-Cola Scholars. They were evaluated on the basis of their academic achievements, community leadership and the desire for success. Fifty of the students were selected for the National Scholarship of $20,000 and 200 were selected for the Regional scholarship of $10,000.

The scholarship program is sponsored by the Coca Cola Scholars Foundation, a joint partnership of Coca-Cola Bottlers across America and the Coca-Cola Company. The program is one of the largest corporate-sponsored scholarship programs in the United States. The scholarships are for high school seniors who have great academic achievement, involvement in the community and in school. A banquet was held in honor for the 2007 Coca-Cola National Scholar at Atlanta, Georgia. The President and Chief Operating Officer of the Coca-Cola Company, Muhtar Kent, congratulated the students on their achievement and persuaded them to continue their education to reach their goals. Also during the weekend, the students explored CNN studios, the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, the Georgia Aquarium, attended leadership lectures and saw some Atlanta Braves baseball games.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Program was formed in 1986 to honor the 100th anniversary of the company. The foundations agenda is to provide education for leaders of tomorrow through college scholarships. Since its inception the foundation has awarded $32 million to nearly 3,750 Coca Cola Scholars.
