1000 Students Receive the Gates Millennium Scholarship

1,000 students nation wide received the Gates Millennium Scholarship. The recipients for the scholarships are from low income minorities with excellent leadership skills and excel academically. The scholarship will cover tuition for all four years of college.

The Gates Millennium Scholarship was founded through a partnership of the Bill& Melinda Gates Foundation and The United Negro College Fund. Since the last 20 years they have donated almost $1 billion to high school seniors going to college. The Scholarship pays for educational programs like, engineering, library science, mathematics and public health until students receive a doctoral degree. Over the past years, the Gates Millennium Scholarship gave over 10,000 students scholarships to go to college. The Gates Scholars are enrolled in 1,300 colleges and universities that represent all 50 states and 5 international areas. Their graduation rate has been 77.6% in 5 years. Many of the stories told by these students are journeys to gaining more knowledge and making themselves better. For most, they are the first one to go to college.

The United Negro Fund is the nations largest, oldest and most thriving minority education assistance organization. Since 1944, the United Negro Fund has given more then 350,000 minority students an opportunity to go to college with more the $2 billion in scholarships. Some of UNCF alumni include famous personalities like Spike Lee, Samuel L. Jackson, Dr W.E.B. Dubois, Lionel Ritchie and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. These individuals have played major roles in Entertainment, education, law and politics.
