Rotary Foundation Scholarship Applications Available for 2008-2009.By Rachna Mehra Eligibility ? Applicants must be citizens of a country in which there are Rotary clubs, ? Candidates must have completed 2 years of college or equivalent, The rotary foundation sponsors one of the largest international scholarship programs, The Ambassadorial Scholarship is one of the oldest and best known. Since 1947, the foundation has sponsored about 37,000 men and women from various nations at a cost of about $500 million. The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to enhance friendly relations among people of different countries. While abroad, students serve as ambassadors of goodwill to the people of the host country and give presentations about their home countries to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share their experiences with local Rotarians. The Rotary Foundation offers various scholarships such as Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarship - This is one of the most common types of scholarships offered. Students are provided with a grant of US$23,000 or its equivalent for one academic year of study in another country. This award covers transportation costs, tuition, fees, room and board expenses, and some educational supplies. Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholarship - This scholarship sponsors two years of degree-oriented study in another country. A flat grant of US$11,500 or its equivalent is granted per year towards the cost of a degree program. Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarship - This scholarship is for either three or six months and is granted for intensive language study and cultural interest in another country. A flat grant of US$10,000 or its equivalent is provided for 3 months and US$15,000 or its equivalent for 6 months. The Scholarship covers costs associated with transportation, language training expenses, and living arrangements. Candidates interested in studying Arabic, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, and Swedish are considered.
