Scholarships are a Great Solution to Paying for College

By Liz Lunn

Finding a good paying, enjoyable job is getting more and more difficult. Attending college and obtaining a degree are very important if you want to fulfill your potential in the job market today. However, college can be very expensive. If you cannot afford to pay for college on your own, you are going to need financial aid to help you.

Financial aid can come in the form of grants, work study, loans or scholarships. Loans need to be repaid and may require a credit check. If your credit is less than ideal, loans may not be available, or you may pay a higher interest rate. Work study involves a program that allows you to work while in school in return for financial assistance.

Scholarships and grants do not have to be repaid and there is not usually any need to check your credit history. However, you have to apply for and usually compete with others to obtain a scholarship or grant. They are available in limited numbers and the competition can be fierce.

Many schools offer grants and scholarships, and a separate application is not required by most schools. However, some of the school-sponsored programs are highly competitive and you may need to submit an application, an essay and additional materials.

Companies and organizations that are not schools also offer scholarship opportunities. You will need to apply for these. Some are limited to people who are of a certain religion or race. Some require that you study a certain subject. Be sure to read the qualifications carefully before you spend a lot of time applying for a scholarship you are ineligible to receive. You should apply for as many scholarships as you can within the limited time you have available.

Read each application carefully. Note the deadline and make sure you start working in plenty of time to finish early. If you plan to finish early it will prevent you from having to rush at the last minute and make careless mistakes.

Not all scholarships require a complex application process. Some only require a simple application form. There are plenty of scholarship opportunities online.
